The Australian Indigenous Education Foundation has commenced its successful Indigenous scholarship program in Western Australia and formalised a groundbreaking partnership with BHP Billiton Iron Ore, which was announced at a breakfast function in Perth on 30 August 2011.


In this video message, the Hon Peter Garrett MP, Minister for School Education, Early Childhood and Youth sends his congratulations to AIEF and BHP and celebrates the opportunities this will provide for students across Western Australia, including at least 35 from the Pilbara.

In June 2010, AIEF jointly arranged a program which saw 100 Indigenous secondary school students from around Australia travel to Canberra to spend a week seeing how Government works, including being assigned to a Parliamentary office of MPs and Senators for work experience in Parliament House.  Sponsored by Senator The Hon Mark Arbib, Minister for Employment Participation, under the Learn Earn Legend! Work Experience with Government initiative, the program was a huge success.

Ellen Fanning of 60 Minutes tells the uplifting story about a number of the nation’s leading boarding schools which are opening their doors thanks to scholarships for marginalised Indigenous students. Students and graduates from St Joseph's College, Hunters Hill and Kincoppal-Rose Bay School are profiled and show how they are using these educational opportunities to turn their lives around.

Kristy Kennedy – Indigenous Lawyer from Bourke making a better future for herself

Kristy Kennedy shares her journey as a young Indigenous girl growing up in Bourke, attending St Scholastica's College, Glebe, studying Law at Sydney University and gaining a cadetship at one of Australia's leading law firms, Allens Arthur Robinson. Kristy talks about her experiences, the importance of education and helping younger Indigenous children, and especially girls, access a quality education.

Indigenous Program Succeeds in NSW

100 Indigenous students from all over the country spent a week of work experience in Parliament and offices of federal MPs and Senators in Canberra as part of the Learn Earn Legend! Work Experience with Government program.


One of the students selected to give the opening speech in front of hundreds of government officials, guests, students and media is Nahdia, who studies at St Vincent's College in Sydney on an AIEF Scholarship.

Scholarship opens doors for Indigenous students

Libby and Mitch are studying Law and Commerce at The University of New South Wales.  They reside at Shalom College, which offers them an inclusive and supportive learning and living environment – made possible by the AIEF/Shalom Gamarda Indigenous Scholarship Program.
